The heart of the system is the fuel pump. It pushes fuel from the tank and sends it under pressure to the injectors, which spray it into the engine's intake manifold. The pump is powered by the vehicle's electrical system.
There are two basic types of fuel pump configurations: hanger assemblies and modules. Both utilize a fuel pump inside them. These fuel pumps are not like the fuel pumps from the past. Fuel pumps today are highly sophisticated units that have self-contained fuel reservoirs, electronic fuel level senders, built-in filtration, digital fuel pressure sensors and regulators, and high-pressure, low-pulse pumps.

Fuel systems can fail for several reasons, including contaminants/clogging, electrical problems, and fuel pump failure. Diagnosis is complicated by the fact that the fuel system runs from one end of the vehicle to the other and includes:

• the tank |
• filter |
Symptoms of a failed fuel pump, or faulty pump fuel electrical system are:
• Poor starting
• No starting
• Intermittent fuel cut-off
• Loud fuel pump noise or whine
• Poor vehicle performance at heavy throttle
With so many variables involved, diagnosing the problem and correcting it is no simple task.
A qualified technician will conduct three tests to discover the problem:
• Fuel pressure test
• Fuel flow test
• Voltage drop test
If the fuel pump is faulty and needs to be replaced, the technician will remove the fuel tank from the vehicle, remove the pump, clean the tank, install a new pump in the tank and then reattach the tank to the vehicle. This process takes a considerable amount of time. This labor time, and the cost of a new, sophisticated fuel pump module can be expensive.
The best way to avoid this expensive repair is to keep your fuel system clean, never let your tank run dry (fuel keeps the pump lubricated and cool).
If the time comes where you need to replace your pump, be sure sure you choose a Carter fuel pump.

Carter fuel pumps are manufactured by Federal-Mogul. With over 100 years of engine experience, Federal-Mogul understands the importance of designing fuel pumps that meet or improve upon OE specifications for performance.
Federal-Mogul puts its experience of innovation and technology into every Carter fuel pump. Some of these features are:
Turbine pumpsTurbine pumps are gradually replacing roller vane pumps. They can withstand contamination better and are less likely to fail if debris passes through. Carter electric fuel pumps make use of this quiet, durable turbine design.
Carter pumps also include an advanced fuel strainer – CleanScreen™. It catches and holds 40% more contaminants than standard designs. By keeping dirt away from the pump but allowing fuel to pass through, CleanScreen helps vehicles keep going in dirty fuel situations that would stop others in their tracks. By the way, it is VERY important to install a new strainer when replacing a fuel pump.
Solid Silver Sender contacts:Here’s another plus: Carter sender contacts – the things that tell your gas gauge how much gas is in the tank – are made of solid silver, so they really stand up to corrosion and wear.
